Paul Berkman’s 3 Top Personal Influences

Yesterday we brought you Paul Berkman, Financial Consultant at AXA Advisors. He explained why people should stop seeing low points and frustrations as obstacles, but opportunities. (If you missed Paul, go back and listen here.)

Even superstar leaders know it takes a village. People need inspiration sometimes, and for Paul that inspiration comes from the people on the other side of the table. He talks about the people who helped him along, even when he didn’t think he was qualified.

1. Robert Brown

Robert introduced me to the field of convertibles. He really taught me how to be an expert and believe in myself as one, not to mention teaching me hard skills like computer programming. Robert gave me my first break, which eventually led to the rest.

2. Jay Regan and Ed Thorp

Jay and Ed brought me into the world of hedge funds, so that I could head up convertible training even though I had never held such a position. Their faith in me gave me confidence to rise to the occasion, even if I was afraid.

3. Colin McKenna

Colin opened the door for me at AXA, offering a position that would let me reinvent myself at an age when a lot of other people are starting to see their windows close. Without Colin, there’s no chance I would be in my current position.
