JV Crum's Influencers and Why They Were Pivotal or Especially Significant

On yesterday’s episode of Smashing the Plateau, Phyllis Haserot talked about improving relationships among different generations in the workplace. She explained that internal relationships can cause a company to grow (or it can cause a successful company to hit a plateau).

Below, are some of her biggest influences:

1) Larry Alexander

My boss and first real mentor I had (when I was 30). He was CEO of an urban planning consulting, conference and newsletter firm – entrepreneur – who recognized and encouraged my talents and growth as a leader, writer, speaker, and made me VP of the firm at 31.

2) My father

He got me interested in sports, law and political issues and encouraged me to have a serious career. (Unfortunately he passed away when I was 16.)

3) Baseball managers and GMs; Musicians (e.g., Tony Bennett, Bill Charlap) and creative teams in the arts for their facility in working with multi-generations.

4) The Gen Y/Millennials I have as colleagues, friends and mentees – for the mutual learning, energy, and reinforcing my feeling of continuing relevance and value for the future.

5) Shawn Driscoll

The “Trailblazer Coach” who enabled me to better articulate the trailblazer character I have had throughout my career(s) and see the pros and cons of those characteristics more clearly.
